From Springfield to Nauvoo: Intersections of Mormon and Lincoln Stories May 24-26, 2009
This is a three-day and two night bus tour to Nauvoo. It provides an opportunity to travel to parts of the Illinois landscape that were familiar to Joseph Smith and Abraham Lincoln but are not typically included on Nauvoo tour itineraries.
Sunday the tours begins with a half-day trip from Springfield to Nauvoo following
the route that Joseph Smith traveled in the winter of 1842-1843 for his extradition
trial in federal court. Bryon Andreasen will provide on-board commentary as bus
reaches locations where the Prophet’s entourage passed through or stayed—
including Captain Dutch’s Halfway House, Rushville, Augusta, Plymouth, and
Carthage. In Carthage, we will stop for lunch, tour the Kibbe Museum, Carthage Jail, the Hancock County Courthouse, and drive by Carthage locations that share both Mormon and Lincoln history.
Monday includes two, half-day tours. One bus travels to the outlying areas of Hancock County (Pontoosuc, Dallas City, LaHarpe, Fountain Green, Webster (Ramus), Tioga (Morley’s Settlement), Lima, and Warsaw) while the second buses takes attendees to historic Nauvoo to tour their favorite sites at their own pace.
After box lunches the tours will be switched in the afternoon. Dinner will be served at the Hotel Nauvoo and will be followed for an evening presentation.
Tuesday morning we will leave early for Quincy for a quick stop at the new Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square exhibits, with arrival time back in Springfield by noon. Fees include bus transportation, all meals, two nights lodging, and all entrance fees. Space is limited to only two buses – register early.
Lodging
Attendees will be housed in the Nauvoo Vacation Condos & Villas. It offers spacious bedrooms, living rooms, full kitchens, high speed internet, and satellite televisions. Most units have two bedrooms and two bathrooms. There is also double-size sofa sleeper in each living room. There are six single units and six with three bedrooms. All rooms are non-smoking. The kitchens will be stocked with breakfast foods and snacks.

Note: all bedrooms have a king size bed and some will also have a twin bed. When you register please list roommate name and persons you would like to share the condo with. Also indicate if you would be willing to sleep on a sofa sleeper in the front room.

There are regional airports within driving distance – including Southeast Iowa Regional Airport (25 mile from Nauvoo), the Quad City International Airport, and the Greater Peoria Regional Airport (125 miles from Nauvoo) and an Amtrak Station in Ft. Madison, IA. and Nauvoo is only 178 miles from the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. An Amtrak Station is located in Fort Madison, IA only 10 miles from Nauvoo. The Southwest Chief travels between Chicago and Los Angeles daily. The trip to Kansas City, MO is only $40. An Enterprise car rental is located in Ft.
